CEDAW & CSW
The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an international treaty, ratified by New Zealand in 1985. Governments of countries that have ratified CEDAW are obliged to submit periodic reports to the CEDAW monitoring committee, outlining their progress in meeting their obligations under the convention.
In September 1995, the United Nations convened in Beijing the Fourth World Conference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace, during which the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were adopted. The Beijing Declaration demonstrates the determination of the international community in promoting gender equality and enhancing the status of women.
We believe that The United Nations Convention on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform for Action is intended to improve the situation of all women without exception.
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is held annually at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are invited to attend the session.
PWW(NZ) links with Asia Pacific Women’s Watch (APWW), a regional network of women’s groups which has five sub-regions (Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, South-East Asia and the Pacific).
APWW was established after the UN 4th World Conference on Women, held in Beijing 1995. It collaborates with United Nations agencies, national governments and non-government organisations (NGOs) in empowering women and advancing their human rights. At the annual UN Commission on Status of Women, New York, APWW speaks strongly for all its member ‘Watch’ groups.
As Pacific Women’s Watch (NZ) is ECOSCO-accredited, you are invited to join our cohort of passionate advocates for Aotearoa and the Pacific.
The upcoming and very special next gathering is CSW64 / Beijing+25 from 9 to 20 March 2020. We will mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995). A five-year milestone will be reached towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
